5 Clues to Talent

There are 5 Clues to Talent.

Having a strengths report with the all the 34 strengths ranked in order makes it easy to identify your top 5, 10 or 15.

But what if you haven’t completed your assessment or someone in your team hasn’t yet completed theirs you can still look for strengths and have a strengths based conversation.

There are 5 clues to talent and this week I covered each of these, here is the summary.

Clue 1 Flow.

I am confident we have all experienced doing an activity and you realise that time has literally flown. You know what they say time flies when you are having fun!

Another example of being in flow is where you approach a task and you just seem to know automatically the steps that need to be taken.

When you experience either of these it is likely that were doing something that was a natural or innate talent. You were playing to your strengths.

Next time this happens think about what it was you were doing, which elements of the activity came naturally?

What activities do you do, and time just flies?

Clue 2 Yearning

What activities are you naturally drawn to?

Yearning a feeling of intense longing for something.

This can be described as pull or attraction to one activity over another.

One question you can ask yourself or your team is “What do you know you can do well, but haven’t yet done?”

“If you had an entire week of your calendar open up and couldn’t work on previous commitments, what would you spend your time doing?”

If you were given the opportunity to create your dream job, do you know what it would look like?

It’s likely that if it’s your dream job you are attracted to it because it plays to your strengths.

Clue 3 Satisfaction

Do you ever finish a task and think I can’t wait to do that again?

It would be unusual to that kind of motivation without there being a natural talent at play somewhere.

Think about these times and try to work out what it is you specifically enjoy or are good at.

Is this a clue to a strength?

What are you doing (at work or at play) when you’re truly enjoying yourself?

Clue 4 Rapid Learning

What have you done recently that you just didn’t need explaining?

Some things just appear to come naturally it’s like it’s ingrained in our DNA. This is a natural talent and could be a clue to a strength.

Another thing to look for is when you just appear to be able to do something naturally but when asked to explain it to others you can’t break in down into steps.

What do you do naturally?

Clue 5 Glimpses of Excellence

What have other people told you you’re great at doing?

Others may recognise your talents before you. Sometimes we are simply just too close to recognise where we are naturally talented or most often we just take it for granted.

Listen to others, listen for feedback or even ask for it.

Another way you can think about this is by looking at your previous experiences and asking yourself what were you known for doing well?

I hope you found this useful.
